Life doesn't come with an instruction manual; but if it did, I believe D-Day and the Battle of Normandy would be one of its chapters.

75 years after D-Day, we are in a unique, if unprecedented, moment in history.

At a recent symposium at the National War College, I listened to Susan Eisenhower--grand daughter to Dwight D. Eisenhower--say that, "at 75 years all momentous events shift from recent memory to history."

In many ways, we are at that crossroads: in one direction, there is remembrance, awareness, and purpose; and in the other, apathy, ignorance, and misdirection. Lifelong leaders are lifelong learners.  So, it should follow, then that whether in life or policy, remembering the extraordinary service and sacrifice endured by our veterans on June 6th and beyond is now a prerequisite to effective leadership.
